General Windows Updates & Feature Updates from Microsoft

General Updates

It is good practice to check for Windows Updates every day. Updates of various kinds come through from Microsoft most weeks and if you see these, install them as promptly as you can.

Feature Updates

Feature Updates from Microsoft are usually twice yearly and arrive in the first and last quarter of the year.

Hence the terms 1903, 1909 and 2004, which meant respectively, March 2019, September 2019 and April 2020. The latest notation for Windows versions are—for example—21H1 or 21H2. Which mean respectively First half of year 2021 and Second half of year 2021.

Microsoft will always alert us when these special updates are going to be released.
It is good practice to install them as soon as they become available, providing us with enhanced security and OS efficiency.

The procedure for running Windows Updates is as follows:

  • Click the Windows Start Icon.
  • Click the Settings Icon.
  • Open the Updates and Security option.
  • Make sure Windows Updates is selected in the left column.
  • Click the Check for Windows Update “button” in the top region of the right column.
  • If updates are showing already for installation, opening this window will automatically start their download and installation.
  • A Restart “button” may appear after the list of updates has fully download. Simply click this button to allow the computer to install the updates and return to the Windows Updates page again to re-check for possible further updates.
  • Continue to check until the page indicates there are no further updates.
  • When restarting to complete the updating procedure you may encounter a screen showing a percentage value of installation prior to the lock-screen appearing for re-entry to your computer.
